Description of Sonnets from the Portugese:
Sonnets from the Portuguese: A Celebration of Love was written by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, (1806-1861) - one of the most influential female poets in British literature. Elizabeth secretly wrote the 44 love sonnets in 1845-6 during her courtship with fellow poet Robert Browning. The two met after Elizabeth praised one of Roberts poems in her work, The Courtship of Lady Geraldine. Thus began an exchange of love letters between the two that culminated in their meeting in person, as each poem marks a point in their evolving relationship. Elizabeth did not show the poems to Robert until after they were married in September of 1846. At her husband's suggestion, the second edition of her Poems included her love sonnets which were first published in 1850. In 1861, Elizabeth Barrett Browning died at the age of 55. Her son, born 1849, and husband returned to England after her death. The sonnets helped increase Elizabeths popularity as a writer and the story of their romance continues to be famous today. ** Thank you for purchasing this book, we trust you will enjoy and we encourage you to do this and to share the book with others through the email option or to give them away using the gift option in the secure purchase channel.
